The Janes Market Potential Index (MPI) provides an assessment of the status and appeal of 59 world defence markets based on factors including defence investment; defence industrial capabilities; procurement procedures and protocols; trade mechanisms; embargo status; and political, economic, and security considerations.
- Each market may be ranked against 36 ratings, with scores of 0 (low) to 5 (high) a positive or negative appeal.
- Users are able to view the Market Potential Index from the perspective of one of nine international exporting countries (China, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Russia, Sweden, United Kingdom or the United States) or take a generic 'international' view.
- Ratings change depending on the perspective selected to take into account international embargoes and existing trade and government relations.

How to use Janes Market Potential Index (MPI)
The Market Potential Index is contained within an Excel spreadsheet that may be downloaded from this page. On the 'User Options' tab select the exporter's perspective required from the 'Select Country of Origin' drop-down menu.

Select the market sectors of interest (land, sea, or air) from the drop-down menu and proceed to the next tab (Market Potential Index).
On the Market Potential Index tab the rankings may be arranged by using the filters on the horizontal heads row.
